Abstract

This paper explores the Vedas, a Hindu philosophical text, from both traditionalist and critical viewpoints. It deliberates the concept of intertextuality within the Vedic texts, highlighting how later texts reference earlier ones, such as the imagery of two birds in the ?g-Veda. The Upani?ads represent a shift from ritualistic practices to a focus on knowledge and wisdom, as illustrated through dialogues in texts like the Ch?ndogya Upani?ad. The paper critiques the traditional view that the Vedas are authorless and eternal, arguing that they contain human errors and reflect the fallibility of their composers. The paper also discusses how later interpretations of the Vedas have been influenced by socio-political contexts, mainly regarding caste. The paper argues against the notion that Vedic hymns were dictated by gods, suggesting that the relationship between the poet and the deity is akin to a lover serenading their beloved. The paper highlights the importance of understanding the Vedas as literary achievements reflecting the human experience and philosophical evolution within ancient Indian society. It provides a complete understanding of the debates surrounding the Vedas, their elucidations, and their implications for contemporary Hindu thought.
