Abstract
This article revisits the seminal report ‘Our Common Future’, putting in focus the statement of articulation of sustainable development as a process of meeting present needs without compromising future generations. It delineates the critical role of technology, institutional reforms and effective management in overcoming ecological, technological as well as social constraints. The report highlights advocacy for addressing widespread poverty through egalitarian growth via democratic governance. This publication criticizes steady-state economic models as being too restrictive while championing green growth and inclusive development. Analyzing the philosophical, ecological, and economic dimensions, it examines the shifting relationship between humankind, resources, and technology. It promotes a balanced approach that balances restraint, innovation, and collaboration as a means to navigate the sustainability challenges. It ends by calling for shared responsibility, reinforcing the relevance of ‘Our Common Future’ as a guiding framework for global sustainability initiatives.
