The paper explores how the Nepali community in Manipur create modern myths and tales to recognize themselves in the context of their exclusion from mainstream history and culture. The paper further discusses how the Nepalis in Manipur have re-imagined their ‘Gorkha martial legacy’ through ‘heroic pattern’ myths of bravery and heroism. The paper further discusses the community's use of the ‘Victoria Paltan’ myth, which, while being historically doubtful, exemplifies how myths can be used to create and legitimize a sense of individuality lacking historical narratives.
The paper also looks at the use of the Kukhri dance as a means of confirming Gorkha's identity. This dance, with its roots in the military history of the Gorkhas, has become a symbol of Nepali identity and serves to connect the community to a shared martial legacy. The paper concludes by discussing the broader question of ethnicity and its relation to the national identity concerning the Nepalis in Manipur. The author argues that the Nepalis in Manipur face a constant struggle to balance their identity with the leading ethnic and cultural groups in Manipur.
