Abstract

Femininity as a gender has been looked down as inferior to the celebrated masculinity. In Indian context effeminized male is more exposed to torture and exploitation than women. Drawing on data from Indian scenario this article considers whether the hyper masculine anxiety as hired from the European Colonizers, the Indian culture affords feminized men the space to challenge, reaffirm, and play with dominant understanding of what it is to be a man. Using cinematic portrayal this paper would scrutinize the extent to which their intentional and unintentional ‘‘feminization’’ provides scope for challenging the colonial gender norms.  Those who subvert the prevailing values surrounding masculinity are at constant risk of being ‘‘misunderstood.’’. As case studies I would like to cite three Indian movies: Pankh in Hindi, Natarang in Marathi and Arekti Premer Golpo in Anglo-Bengali
