Abstract

In the present era of modernization and development each and every society is trying hard to move up the scale of these parameters of a modern society and reserve a berth for itself in the slot of the developed and civilized nations of the world with a high score on the HDI (Human Development Index). Unfortunately despite claims of shining India and an emerging power in the world, the plight of women in general and tribal women in particular is still a matter of serious concern. Punjab has tribal population but the government denies their existence while they are asking for Scheduled Tribe status to them. Their traditional occupations are becoming redundant and hence their means of livelihood. The brunt is borne by women who are now having a demeaning existence. It is argued that due to modernization, besides other factors, the depletion of forests and lack of education, these people are caught in a vicious circle of not getting out of their traditional occupations due to lack of modern skills and are coerced to undertake unskilled manual labour and begging etc. because of lack of education since they cannot acquire it as many of them are nomadic and poor. The problem of running the household falls primarily on women be it obtaining the grain or fuel wood. Hence there is manifold increase in their woes and worries on the face of lost occupations and natural resources besides their inability to obtain new skills for the modern market.
